World War I
Overview and Causes
World War I lasted from 1914 to 1919. It was an extremely bloody war, according to the website above. Many soldiers lost their lives. The spark that started World War I was when Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated (June 28th,1914). Ferdinand was visiting the city of Sarajevo in the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Nations Involved in World War I (The Alliances)
There were over twenty-seven countries involved in World War I. Some are:
~Austria-Hungary- They initiated the war by declaring war on Serbia in July 1914.
~Belgium- Even though they are mostly neutral, they joined WWI against the German invasion.
~Brazil- Joined WWI in 1917 on the side of the Allies.
~British Empire- Formed part of the Allied camp.
~Bulgaria- Joined the central powers in 1915 and fought until September 1918.
~China- entered WWI in 1917.
~France and Colonies- One of the major allied nations, declared war with the German declaration of was against France on August 3rd, 1914.
~German Empire- A major central power; Austria-Hungary's declaration of war was influenced by Germany's support.
~Greece- Joined the side of the allies on June 27th,1917.
~Italy- Was reluctant to join due to its alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary; Sided with the Allies in 1915.
~Japan- Entered WWI in 1914.
~Liberia- Liberian trade was affected by WWI; the country joined the Allied Powers in 1917.
~Montenegro- Linked closely with Serbia; Joined Allies in 1917.
~Ottoman Empire- Joined WWI in November 1914; Central Powers (due to its close ties with Germany).
~Portugal- Despite the rivalry between Portugal and Germany, Portugal remained neutral until March 1915, when Germany declared war; Joined the Allies.
~Romania- Joined the Allies in August 1916.
~Russia- Along with Britain and France, was one of the major Allied Powers; First among the nations to mobilize troops against Germany.
