The Fall of the Bastille

The Bastille, a state prison, was a symbol of despotism.  There were rumors of its tortures and cruelties. Even though the prison only had 7 prisoners.  People were furious when they heard there were arms in the Bastille.  So, they attacked.  When the defenders of the Bastille realized that there defenses were being attacked they urged the governor to surrender.  Clearly, he was too thick-headed since he would sooner blow up the prison than surrender it.  Before he could do this, the guards raised a white flag.  Their only condition was that they were to receive no harm.  They lowered the drawbridge to surrender, but the crowd was too strong and several soldiers were killed.  The governor ended up having his head cut off.  The fall of the Bastille showed how brutal the French Revolution was.  The reason French liberty triumphed over despotism was that when the governor of the Bastille pointed a cannon at a street in Paris, the people surrounded the Bastille demanding that the cannon be aimed somewhere else.  It does seem that the writer of the article was for French liberty over despotism.  Especially at the end, since he started to say "our" and "us".
