Department Stores

Wanamaker's was the first department store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  And one of the first department stores in the United States.  John Wanamaker, the founder of Wanamaker's, was unable to join the U.S. Army because of a persistent cough.  Since he was rejected, he went into business with his brother-in-law, Nathan Brown.  They found a clothing store in Philadelphia called Oak Hall.  After Brown's death John continued on.  He bought a bigger space and transformed Oak Hall into Wanamaker's Grand Depot.
Sears, a common shop known to people today.  Most of us still shop there.  Sears real name is Sears, Roebuck and Company.  It was founded by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck in 1893.  Except at that time it was a mail order catalog.  In 1925, they began opening actual stores.  Until October 1989, Sears was America's largest retailer.  That is until Walmart came into the picture.

Macy's, originally R.H. Macy's & Co..  Macy's was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy.  He opened four retail stores between 1843 and 1855.  When Macy was a teenager, he got a tattoo of a star.  That is why every Macy's logo has had a star in it, one way or another.
